Carrick awards prizes for gardening

Mike Woshner, the Carrick Neighborhood Garden coordinator, maintains the gardens at Concord Elementary School, the Mother's Statue on Overbrook Boulevard, the Veterans Memorial on Parkfield and the garden at Citizens Bank on Brownsville Road, with the help of Girl Scout Cadet Troops 357 and 344 and several Eagle Scouts from Carrick. Their efforts were acknowledged during the Carrick Goes Gardening awards.

The 2006 Carrick Goes Gardening awards were distributed during the 29th Ward Carrick Block Watch meeting in September. Awarded cash prizes for their first place gardening efforts were Audrey Dawida, Edward DeBald, Bonnie Lancia, Celeste Legas, Betty White and Jean Young.

All who participated in the contest were given a hardy garden mum and a certificate. Other participants included Jeannie Backo, Diana Cipollone, Kevin Dieterle, Ruth Frey, Fran and Geri Gutkowski, Joann Herman, Mary Ann Markowitz, Vicki McCue, Linda Metcalfe, Mary Angela Ogg, Megan Perfetti, Jeff Porro, Carol Readshaw, Michael Woshner, the Birmingham United Church of Christ, Readshaw Funeral Home, and Spencer United Methodist Church.

The Carrick Goes Gardening Committee members were Michael Woshner, Mary Ann Markowitz, Linda McClory, Rachel Pallotta, Shannon Luczynski, and Chairperson Carol Readshaw. In addition, Megan Perfetti designed and printed the certificates presented to the gardeners.
