Run for Roch, pasta dinner will benefit scholarship fund

The first annual Run for Roch 5K Race/1 Mile Walk will be held on Saturday, July 30 at 8:45 a.m. starting on Grandview Avenue in Mount Washington.

The race, named in memory of Roch P. Furguiele, will raise funds for a scholarship to Slippery Rock University in his name. Furguiele died July 31, 2004 at the age of 26 while swimming in the Cheat River in West Virginia.

Rocky, as he was popularly known, grew up in Mount Washington and attended Carrick High School and Slippery Rock University. An extraordinary athlete in high school and college, he finished 14th overall in the Walt Disney World Marathon in 2004, his first, and was a member of the first place relay team in the 2002 Pittsburgh Marathon.

The event features a Mount Washington Community Day on Shiloh Street with bands, children's activities and vendors following the race.

There will also be a fundraising Spaghetti Dinner at 6:30 p.m. at Saint Mary of the Mount School, 115 Bigham Street featuring dinner, music, prizes, and a Chinese auction. Tickets are $7; call Donna at 412-481-8813 for more information.
