Mark your calendars, call the family, buy your tickets and pack the picnic basket: The 74th annual Polish Day celebration will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 2, at Kennywood Park. The day will feature a Polish Kitchen, which opens at noon.
Park goers can enjoy homemade pierogi, kielbasa, cucumbers and sour cream, cabbage and noodles, paczki, and other delicacies while listening to strolling musicians who will entertain from noon until 3 p.m.
Beginning at 3 p.m., the afternoon festivities will include a program honoring Judge Edward J. Borkowski of the Court of Common Pleas Juvenile Division as Polonian of the Year 2005.
Polish Cultural Council President Col. Merle Addams described Judge Borkowski in this way: “Like his father before him, Edward Borkowski is an outstanding example of a great Polish-American. As an Assistant District Attorney, he successfully prosecuted some of the most notorious cases in the history of Allegheny County. Edward is an intelligent, compassionate human being who is deeply involved in his community, and we are proud to claim him as one of our own.”
The afternoon will also feature the crowning of Miss Polonia 2005.
A Roman Catholic Mass commemorating and celebrating the life of Pope John Paul II, sung by the Karuzela Chorus, will follow the formal program. The celebration will conclude with entertainment by the Karuzela Chorus and Dancers and Kevin Solecki of the nationally famous “Polka Family Band.”
New this year will be a Children's Center, featuring supervised games and arts and crafts from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 5 to 6 p.m. Following the day's formal program there will be dancing from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m., featuring the music of “Henny and the Versa J's.” Admission is free to the polka dance.
When purchased in advance Ride-AllDay passes are $18 each, a savings of $11 over tickets purchased at the park. New at Kennywood this year is the $10 Fun Pass for those 55 and older (with proper identification), which will admit the holder to the park and allow him or her to ride all day.
