Sometimes the holiday spirit comes in form of neighbors

December 28, 2004

Joann Herman, organizer of the 29th Ward Carrick Block Watch, was losing her Christmas spirit last week.

All the hustle and bustle of the holiday season was becoming overwhelming and to top it off, her Christmas tree complete with decorations had toppled over.

Disgusted with the turn of events she took to the chore of righting the tree and replacing the ornaments when something “wonderful” happened. Something she hadn't experienced in more than 30 years. Herman began hearing music coming from the front of the house and assumed it was her husband watching television or playing the radio.

Instead what she found was her neighbors caroling on the front porch. Standing in the cold were Dolly Sherred, Rosemary Gorecki, Rita Schirria and their children harmonizing to the standards of the season.

“It makes your day,” Herman said of the neighbors coming out in the cold to raise spirits. “It's caring about others and what Christmas is all about.”
