Lisa Stabryla, fifth grader at Concord Elementary School, earned the grand prize in a national essay contest with her entry titled “Why I Appreciate the Families of Men and Women in the U.S. Armed Forces.” Sears and the National Military Families Association sponsored the contest.
Lisa, whose essay was one of 1,150 entries, was awarded $2,500 with $1,000 going to Concord school. Concord students honored her with a message from each student as part of a surprise school display on April 20. She read her essay to classes throughout the building and later there was an assembly and pizza party.
Her achievement was recognized at a meeting of the Pittsburgh Schools' where she was presented with a Distinguished Achievement Certificate. Her essay, along with others from across the country, will be published in a volume that will be available at local libraries.
